Jefferson Stephen Ward (1876 - 1949) Oil on board, signed lower right, measures 15 x 18 inches and 17 x 20 inches w/frame. Jefferson Stephen Ward (1876-1949) was born in St Joseph, Missouri on April 4, 1876. He studied with Nicholas Brewer, and with Maurice Braun in San Diego. During the 1920s, he lived in Glendale, California where he opened an art gallery with his son Thurlow Ward. By the early 1930s the elder Ward was in Jacksonville, Oregon but soon returned to Los Angeles where he died on July 22, 1949. Member: California Art Club; Artland Club (Los Angeles); Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles; Glendale Art Ass'n. Exhibited: Arizona State Fair (Phoenix), 1923 (honorable mention); Witte Museum (San Antonio), 1929 (honorable mention); Oregon State Fair, 1930.
