Original Antique Engraving Map of Norway - Government of Wardhus - G. Sanson
Valuable hand colored work of historical cartography that provides a unique insight into the political and geographic landscape of Norway in the late 17th century. Published in Paris, France in 1668. The map provides a detailed depiction of the Government of Wardhus, showcasing various cities, towns, and geographical features of the area. With intricate details and accurate geographical information, the map is a testament to the artistic and technical skill of its creator, Guillaume Sanson. Regional maps of Norway from this period showing inland detail as this region was not as much of a focus for the cartographers of western Europe who specialized in making maps of their home regions or of areas where trade was occurring. Sanson executed perhaps the best widely-circulated (but still very rare) suite of maps of Norwegian regions of the time. Along with this map, Sanson also issued the first printed map of all of Norway. Guillaume Sanson, the author of this map, was a member of a distinguished family of French cartographers who were active in the 17th and 18th centuries. He inherited his love of maps from his father, Nicolas Sanson, who was considered one of the greatest cartographers of his time. Guillaume Sanson himself produced a number of important maps and atlases during his career.

The work is in good condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections or fox or mottled marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
