BYZANTINE GLASS BOTTLE WITH FOUR CROSSES
Ca. AD 324 - 640.
A rare ancient Byzantine glass bottle with four crosses, and small spout. The cross on these vessels may represent the large cross erected in 420 by the emperor Theodosius II at Golgotha, where Christ was crucified. These vessels were made for Christians, possibly as tokens for pilgrims visiting the holy sites in Jerusalem or for use in burial rites. The relief designs were produced by blowing molten glass into a mold. For similar see: British Museum number 1911,0513.1.
Size: 160mm x 55mm; Weight: 120g
Provenance: Property of a private UK collector, acquired pre 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
