RUSSIAN SOVIET ETCHING LUBOK BY ALEXANDER KALUGIN

Alexander Kalugin (Russian, born 1949) black and white etching on paper, Joke Carp, 1987, from the series Russian Lubok. Signed and dated in pencil lower right. Inscribed and numbered 3 of 45 in pencil lower to the center. Titled in pencil lower left. Signed and dated in the print upper right. Titled in the print upper left. Alexander Kalugin studied at the studio of the artist Vladimir Weisberg (1965-1967) and the studio of Boris Kozlov (1970-1971) in Moscow. Exhibited at residential and informal exhibitions, as well as expositions of nonconformist artists. In 1998 Kalugin received the First and Second Prizes in the competition for the best graphics and painting at the International Festival of Contemporary Art in Florida, USA. Fairy-tale, philosophical, phantasmagoric paintings-parables in the style of fantastic realism resemble collages, in which both the folklore grotesque of Russian popular prints and the grotesque images of Hieronymus Bosch are involved. He created the authors individual mythology, which mixes the past and the present, modernism and archaism, neo primitivist tendencies, and ironic deformation. Graphic art prints and collectibles.
