Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Western Russia. Today, most are mined in several places around the world, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, East Africa, India, and New Mexico, USA. Today, rarely do any of the Alexandrites you find in jewelry come from Russia.
- Platinum is an extremely rare metal with a concentration of only .005 parts per million in the Earth's crust.
- Many modern sources frequently use “emerald by day, ruby by night.” to romanticize Alexandrite’s color.
- Alexandrite was first discovered in the 1830s in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
