Personal letters by David Yellin regarding his status at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. 1930-1932
Two personal letters in the handwriting and signature of David Yellin. The letters were addressed to Dr. A. Frenkel, who served as the head of the Faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew College in Jerusalem and deals with the status of Yellin himself / 8 leaves of correspondence between David Yellin and Yehuda Leib Magnes, 1930-1932 in Yellin's personal affairs.
* The one letter was written in December 1931, in which Yellin writes that he encloses a copy of an exchange of letters between him and Dr. Hertz, chairman of the board at the Institute of Jewish Studies, dealing with Yellin's status in college and his salary. In this letter, written in a personal tone and with frankness, Yellin blames Kligler, who Harassed him to lower his status and salary. [Two pages in his handwriting and signature]. Attached to this letter 8 pages of the above correspondence between Yellin and Magnes - these pages were typewritten under the heading 'The Hebrew University', with corrections in Yellin's handwriting. In the pages Yellin describes his hard work in writing: "In recent years I have left all the public works I have been engaged in alongside my scientific works and have sat on the Torah and science in the days and nights ... i wrote my lectures in Spanish poetry that became an entire book..." he adds and describes the many hours he worked as a lecturer, and his serious financial situation, and how despite his large investment it was decided to cut his salary.
* Letter dated Adar 5, 1931, in which he announces that he will not be able to attend the faculty meeting, due to a commitment at the university.
Prof. David Yellin [1864-1941], one of the leaders of the settlement, one of the founders of the Zichron Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem, one of the founders of the Teachers' Union and the Hebrew Language Committee, chairman of the National Committee. In 1903 he founded the first kindergarten that operated in Hebrew. In 1925, with the opening of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he was invited to teach Hebrew grammar as well as medieval Hebrew poetry. Yellin taught their for several years, the letters before us dealing with this period of Yellin.
