"On the blood of saints poured out like water, and on the treasures of our settlements who were despised and destroyed" - An important letter by Rabbi Kook to the heads of the rabbis of Turkey after the 1921 riots

Letter signed by Rabbi Kook to the Chief Rabbis of Turkey, Rabbi Chaim Bejarano, after the riots of 1921. Iyar 16, 1921. "In honor of our great rabbi, Rabbi Chaim Bigirato, the Chief Rabbi of Tugrama in Constantinople". In his letter, Rabbi Kook thanks the telegram of consolation sent by a rabbi of Turkey after the riots of 1921 in which 47 Jews were murdered: "With gratitude and great emotion we received the telegram in which honoring of his Tora expresses to us the feelings of his participation in the great sorrow of our holy land in mourning for the disaster that came as a blow to our brethren in Jaffa and the Judean colonies, for the blood of saints poured out like water, and on the treasures of our settlements which were to be despised and destroyed"

These words were written by Rabbi Kook with reference to the events of 1921 were a series of murders, violence, rape, robberies and looting committed by Arabs against  Jews and their property. The events began on May 1, 1921, and ended five days later, on May 6, 1921. They began in Jaffa and spread to other Jewish settlements. During them, 47 Jews were killed and 140 were injured.
