A Large Rare Indian Pahari Painting of Krishna Lifting Govardhan, 18th–19th Century.
This large and vivid Indian Pahari school painting depicts the iconic scene of Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to shelter the villagers of Vrindavan from Indra’s wrathful storm. The composition features Krishna in the centre, with his upraised arm holding the mountain, which is portrayed as a massive green canopy populated with animals. He is surrounded by gopis, villagers, and sacred cows rendered in fine detail and radiant attire.
With frame: Approximately 65.5 x 57cm
Provenance: Private collection from a distinguished W London lady.
