A Rare Indian-Ottoman Talismanic Textile Folio with Deity and Courtly Scenes, 17th-Century.
This extraordinary talismanic folio, dating to the 17th century, represents a fascinating cross-cultural synthesis between Indian visual traditions and Ottoman talismanic function. The figures, attire, and stylization are distinctly Indian—likely drawn from Jain or local devotional visual vocabularies—while the overall function, format, and layout reference Ottoman talismanic scrolls, which were widely used for protection, healing, and spiritual empowerment.
One side of the folio features vibrant scenes of courtly life, deities, animals, and celestial figures, possibly recounting a symbolic cosmology or moral tale. The reverse displays a structured schematic, perhaps representing sacred geometry, ritual layout, or a symbolic cosmogram, flanked by figures holding offerings. These elements suggest ritual use, most likely commissioned by or for a noble or priestly class.
Approximately 25.5 x 12.8cm
Provenance: Private private collection of Natalie B. Kelsey, who acquired the piece in India in 2002.
