Ezer Weizman
The seventh president of the State of Israel
Official medal, 2005
Ezer Weizman was born in Tel Aviv in 1924 to Yehudit nee Krichevsky, born in Rishon Lezion and Lehiel Weizman, a man of the second aliyah, two Zionist families from the builders of the land. His uncle Chaim Weizman was the first president of the State of Israel. Ezer Weizman grew up in Haifa and at the age of 18 he volunteered for the British Royal Air Force, completed a pilot course in Rhodesia as a fighter pilot and was sent to India, where he served until his release in 1946. Ezer was one of the founders of the Israeli Air Force and fought in the War of Independence as a squadron commander and then as a base commander. In 1958 he was appointed commander of the Air Force. In his eight years as a commander, the soldier expanded and intensified towards one of his greatest achievements - the destruction of the air forces of the Arab countries on the ground and in the air in the Six Day War, in which he served as head of the Air Force.
He retired from the IDF in 1969. In 1970 he served as Minister of Transportation on behalf of the Israel Defense Forces and during the Yom Kippur War he was recruited for reserve service in the staff of the late Chief of Staff David Elazar. His political path was varied. From the Likud he moved to work, from supporting the "complete Land of Israel" to recognizing the need for a territorial compromise. He served as Minister of Transportation on behalf of Gahl. In 1976 he returned to freedom after retirement, and had an important part in the "turnaround" and the Likud's rise to power. In 1977 he was appointed Minister of Defense in the government of Menachem Begin. With the visit of the President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, to Israel Weizmann established a close relationship with him and began to invest efforts to achieve the first peace agreement with an Arab country. In October 1986 he joined the Labor Party and was appointed Minister of Science in the unity government.
In 1992 he retired from political life. In March 1993, Ezer Weizman was elected President of the State of Israel. The years of his ministry were characterized by dramatic events such as the signing of the peace agreement with Jordan, the Lebanon War and terrorist incidents which claimed many victims, he made sure to visit each of the bereaved families and often visited the wounded and encouraged their spirits. Weizmann did not hide his political views, he was direct and popular and charismatic. In the eyes of many, he was a symbol of a renewed, valiant Israel, and was a president loved by the citizens of Israel.
Face of the medal: On the face of the medal, the portrait of the late Ezer Weizman and the symbol of the state.
Back of the medal: on the back side, a Spitfire plane that turns into a peace bird, an expression of the transformation that went from a military man to a peace man, from a "hawk" to a "dove" and in the center, a heart and the Star of David, a symbol of his love for the country and the people's love for him.
