The purple gemstone Amethyst (Ahlama) is the birthstone of the month of February. According to the theory of crystals, the stone is attributed to balancing the energy centers of a person, and increasing spiritual understanding.
The origin of the name of the amethyst
The English name of the stone - Amethyst - Amethyst is derived from the Greek word "not drunk". The Greeks used to drink wine from glasses made of amethyst, because they believed that it could prevent drunkenness. According to the Greek writer Pliny the Younger, speaking in the second century of the library, the root of the name in Greek is derived from the oval color of the stone, which is similar to the color of wine.
In the Hebrew language, the amethyst is called - Ahlema. There are opinions of some sages about the interpretation of the name, but it is accepted that the origin of the word in Hebrew is from the word dream, because there was a belief that the stone causes visions and dreams. Back in the 12th century, Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra (RA) referred to the origin of the name and found that in the Arabic language the root - al-halma - also comes from the language of a dream. On the other hand, Rabbi Chai, who lived in the 14th century, believes that the origin of the name is from the language recovery and strength.
The dream in Judaism
According to what is narrated in the Torah, Book of Exodus 39:8-21, the Ahlama is the ninth stone in the high priest's breastplate and is attributed to the tribe of Gad. Our rabbi in my life pointed out the connection between Ibn HaHalma and the tribe of Gad, which was involved in quite a few wars. This stone actually belongs to the tribe of Gad, thanks to its properties to strengthen the heart of the one going into battle.
Midrash Talfiot refers to the "vegetable stone" - the amethyst - which is supposed to be useful for blind eyes. The amethyst is also described as a "black stone with white markings", the wearer of which may reach a state of grief and worry and dream panic dreams.
The Radak, who lived in the 13th century, also referred to the feeling of worry that the stone creates and said: "Brings worry, fear and trembling, and many frightening dreams and fights and quarrels and wars, that the bearer brings upon him."
Properties and healing properties of the amethyst
According to crystal theory, dreaming balances a person's energy centers and increases spiritual understanding. According to Indian belief, it can also help open the third eye, the eye of the soul.
In ancient times, it was believed in its ability to facilitate withdrawal from various addictions such as alcohol and sweets. There were those who believed that it could strengthen the wisdom and faith of the wearers of the stone.
According to another common belief, the Hachalma stone has the power to relieve insomnia and headaches. To relieve headaches or toothaches, soak the dream in hot water for several minutes, wipe it off and gently rub the stone on the affected area or on the neck. Others wore the stone as protection against contagious diseases and evil thoughts.
