Ladino – Tikkun Seudah – Belgrade, 1859 (תרי"ט)
This is a rare and fascinating work titled Tikkun Seudah (The Order for the Meal), printed in Belgrade in 1859 (תרי"ט). The book contains prayers and rituals for various meals throughout the year, including special prayers for the Sabbath and festivals. The text is written in Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish language spoken by the Sephardic Jewish community, and includes a series of instructions and guidelines for the proper conduct during meals at different times of the Jewish year.
The book was printed by Michael Papo, an important figure in the Sephardic community, who is credited with arranging and publishing the text. The work reflects the Sephardic tradition and provides insight into their specific customs related to meal blessings, prayer, and spiritual practices.
Pages: 24
Size: 16 cm
Condition: Good. The book is in overall good condition, with a new binding. There are some stains on the pages, but the text remains legible. However, the last page is missing its upper third, which affects part of the text. Despite this, the book is still considered valuable for its rarity and historical significance.
The text is a valuable example of Jewish ritual in Ladino, highlighting the unique Sephardic customs and the use of the Judeo-Spanish language in religious texts. This book provides a glimpse into the prayer life of the Sephardic Jewish community in the Balkans, particularly in Belgrade, during the 19th century.
Tikkun Seudah is a highly collectible item, especially for those with an interest in Ladino literature, Sephardic Jewish customs, and the history of Jewish communities in the Balkans.
