Buchheister studierte am Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseum. Er ließ sich als freier Künstler in Hannover nieder und gründete hier 1927, u. a. mit Kurt Schwitters, die Künstlervereinigung "Die Abstrakten Hannover". Außerdem war er Mitglied der Pariser Gruppe "Abstraction-Création". Nach 1945 lebte und arbeitete Buchheister zurückgezogen und ab 1958 lebte er die Hälfte des Jahres in Frankreich. Seine Werke sind in internationalen Sammlungen vertreten.
