<<(Somerdik / Samhorodok, Ukraine).>> Pinkas Takanoth d’Chevra Kadisha [ordinances of the community Burial Society]
Hebrew manuscript on paper written in square and cursive Ashkenazic hands.
pp. 27 (lacking first page). Few stains. Modern boards. 4to.
Somerdik (Vinnitsa County, Ukraine): 19th Kislev, 1864
Arranged to correspond with the Hebrew alphabet, this Pinkas lists 22 ordinances, each written in a fine calligraphic hand. Many of the entries are laid out in geometric shapes, and contain little ornaments and flourishes. Written in florid rabbinic Hebrew, the regulations pertain to the nomination and appointment of new members, the festive banquets of the society, and the proper conduct and relationships between members. At the end of the manuscript each member provides his own autograph signature. The Jewish community of Samhorodok dates to the late 18th century. By the end of the 19th century the Jewish population numbered 1,234, comprising 92% of the population. By the Soviet period in the 1920’s the demographics changed considerably, with Jews forming only 28% of the population. The community was entirely destroyed following the Nazi occupation.
