Two rare works of halacha bound together – Shut Maharil / Shut Mahari Weil. Foundational works of psikat halacha for the Ashkenazi world. Hanau 1610
Books by a rabbi and his student bound together – the Shut Maharil and Shut Mahariv – Hanau 1610.

1. Shut Maharil by Rabbi Yaakov HaLevi Moelin Segal, Av Beit Din of Magentza (Mainz) and father of Ashkenazi minhagim. He lived c. 1365 to 1427. In tshuva #148 in this book, he is described as “from your mouth Torah spreads to all of Israel”. Most of the minhagim he quotes were entered by the Rama into his gloss on the Shulchan Aruch, and the Maharil is the source of Ashkenazi prayer minhagim in use even today. He was known as a miracle worker. Pretty illustrated title page with an engraving of the Binding of Isaac and the figures of Moses and Aaron.

Stamps and a signature of Rabbi Reuven HaLevi Frankel of Kalish, son of Rabbi Shmuel Frankel of Kalish, a Kotzk chassid.

72 leaves. Worming damage in the internal margins touching the text in a number of leaves, good condition.

2. Sefer Shut Mahari Weil, by Rabbi Yaakov Weil. Shut Mahariv is a surviving remnant of the great publications of Rabbi Yaakov Weil, a foundational figure in Ashkenazi halachic psak and a figure who clarified Ashkenazi minhagim. It includes shut on various matters and halachot of shechita and bedika. The sections on shechita and bedika were printed separately in many editions over the years.

[92] leaves. Worming damage in the internal margins touching the text in a number of leaves. Two leaves are missing and were filled in by hand. Four leaves from the end of the book are detached (perhaps taken from a different copy, see picture). Good condition.
