Basic Book with Early, Important Glosses: The First Passover Haggadah with Copper Engravings and the Famed map, a Rare Variant of the Title Page - Amsterdam, 1695

Seder Haggadah shel Pesach with many copper engravings and important commentaries. Actually, this Haggadah is the first that integrates many copper engravings depicting the Biblical events throughout the Haggadah. In addition, at its end, a folding plate with a Map of Eretz Yisrael and the division of the land among the Tribes. This map is one of the first Hebrew maps and it was made by the convert Avraham ben Yaakov, who was a Christian preacher who converted to Judaism in Amsterdam. His works left a significant impression on the Hebrew book; yet, undoubtedly, the most famed of them was this map that was based on a map of Canaan by Christian van Adrichem.

The press of Asher Anschel ben Eliezer Chazan and Yissachar ber ben Avraham Eliezer - Amsterdam 1695. [1], 26 leaves and [1] folding map. Two title pages; the first,   an impressive and rare copper engraving with an illustration of Moses beside the burning bush. This illustration does not appear in most copies (a photocopy appears in Stefansky Yesod). In the National Library, it appears in the Rare Book Collection.

The Haggadah contains several commentaries: an Ashkenazic translation of Adir Huh, Echad Mi Yode'ah and Chad Gadya. A commentary by the Abravanel, abbreviated from his book Zevach Pesach. the abbreviator's name is not noted yet this abbreviation is unlike other ones and at its end is a commentary by another author, certainly not the Abravanel. An abbreviation of a commentary by the Gaon Rabbi Yeshaya Halevi Horowitz from his book Shnei Luchot Habrit.

This Haggadah, with its commentaries, engravings and fine layout, served as the basis of many following editions. Stefansky Sifrei Yesod 454.

(See Hebrew catalog text for references to books about the illustrations and maps).

Wine stains and stains of usage. No spine. Some taping - to the map and the Haggadah near its spine. Very good condition.

On the margins of the sheet, comments in ancient Ashkenazic script, containing varied instructions for Leil Haseder, important and early glosses referring to interesting customs, apparently, Ashkenazic ones. The writer is unknown.
