Historical Polemic! Letter Signed by the Geonim of the Eidah HaChareidit against the Prayers of the First Independence Day - Jerusalem, 1949
"אודות מה שהכריזו לחוג את יום ה' באייר בכמה דברים זרים" (About what has been declared to celebrate the fifth of Iyar in some foreign ways). Historical letter signed by the Dayanim and rabbis of the Eidah HaChareidit, against new prayers on Independence Day, a letter that was published before the first Independence Day in 1949.
Background: In 1949, the first Independence Day was declared in the new State of Israel. The Chief Rabbinate published the prayers to be said on this day, including the Hallel with its blessing. In this letter, the rabbis of the Eidah Hachareidit declare that nothing should be changed or added to the customary prayers and that it is forbidden to change any of the customs of the days of Sefirat HaOmer:
"אודות מה שהכריזו לחוג את יום ה' באייר בכמה דברים זרים כי דעתנו דעת תורה שח"ו לשנות ביום ה' אייר שום דבר ממה שנוהגים בכל יום בנוסחי התפלות והתחנונים ... כמו"כ אסור לשנות ביום הנ"ל מהמנהגים ואיסורים של ימי הספירה המבוארים בשו"ע ונו"כ".
