Manuscript that was not printed by Rabbi Chaim Toledano of Meknes with Piskei Din by the Sages of Morocco - Morroco, Late 18th - Early 19th Century
A manuscript, consisting of several manuscripts and containing Piskei Din by varied Moroccan rabbis. The manuscript was compiled and edited by Rabbi Chaim ben Yosef Toledano and most of it was handwritten by him. An important and original item that provides a glimpse into the many activities of the rabbis of the magnificent Moroccan Jewry and the life of the vibrant Jewish community and above all the Torah and halachic rulings of the rabbis of Morocco at that time. The manuscript has never been printed.
The names of the following rabbis appear: "יהודה בן יעקב אזאגור" "שמואל בן יעקב הכהן" "משה די אבילה - משנת תקע"ו". "שמואל אבוקסיס" "שמעון מלכא" and the years 1769, 1803, 1826. In the National Library, there is a manuscript by the same writer from the same years yet with different content. To the best of our knowledge, the content of the manuscript has never been printed and has not been thoroughly studied.
Over a hundred leaves, bound together loosely without a biding. The size of most of the leaves is 16C21.5 cm. Some leaves with an open tear at the border of the text. Stain of scorching on several leaves. Stains. Some detached leaves. Moth damage and perforations. Most of them in good condition.
Rabbi Chaim Toledano (the fifth, passed away in 1848) was born in Meknes and was one of its leading rabbis. Corresponded with many Western rabbis and the rabbis of the Land of Israel. The book Ner HaMa'arav refers to a manuscript by him containing letters from Western rabbis (possibly this manuscript). Authored Shut, a commentary on the Shulchan Aruch and a commentary on the Passover Haggadah and a book of Kinot.
It is told that he was arrested by the governer of Fes alongside ten additional Jewish leaders including Rabbi Yosef Bardugo and passed away in prison ten months later (Arzei Halevanon p. 590).
