Comanche Hide and Wood Saddle c. 1860
This is a rare authentic carved wood and rawhide wrapped saddle from the Comanche Native American Indians that dates to circa 1860's. This amazing saddle shows solid wood construction with a flaring semi rounded horn and seat which has been completely covered in Indian tanned hide which now shows a rich dark patina and stiff finish from being wetted an stretched over the wood. The hide has been rawhide and sinew sewn and complete covers the entire surface with some areas having horn off, such as the horn and edges and the sewn areas being slightly widened. The piece is carved into the side "OK” presumably the origins of the piece from Oklahoma where it was possibly recovered from the Cheyenne Native American Indians. This is one of the earliest saddles of authentic American Indian heritage we have offered for sale and is truly a museum quality piece showing overall well-preserved condition for its early age. Provenance: From a large Western Cowboy and American Indian collection in Dayton, Wyoming. Measures overall 23.5”L by 12”W by 11”H. A similar example previously sold at the Heritage Auction 2013 sale for $4,687.50 with this being a slight more unique example. Overall good condition with the hide showing a rip on one side as shown.
Condition: For a complete representation of condition please review pictures. Some items may have additional images, if so please visit our website directly. It is the buyer's responsibility to view each image and preview the item to determine condition.
