Framed George Catlin 1796-1872 Illustrated Plates
In this lot we have a three book plates by George Catlin. George Catlin was an American painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the old west. Travelling to the American west five times during the 1830s, Catlin was the first white man to depict Plains Indians in their native territory. These three pictures are in one frame, from left to right shows Pe-toh-pee-kiss (The Eagle Ribs) Blackfeet Tribe. The middle photo shows a Native American Shaman or Medicine Man and is labeled as such on the back. The far right picture shows Mah-to-he-hah (The Old Bear). The framed artwork is in fantastic display condition. The visible artwork measures 17 1/2" x 7 1/4" with the frame measuring 25" x 15." From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery.
