Sterling Silver Antique Round Chafer Stand; 1878
For your consideration, a sterling silver antique round chafer stand. The chafer stand has three decorative shell feet and two pins on chains that slide into slots around the perimeter of the stand. The stand has a series of 5 stampings, called hallmarks, that yield interesting information. The first hallmark is "RG" in script under a crown; this is the maker's hallmark: Robert Garrand II of Garrand & Company, LTD., London, England. The second is a lion passant, the indication the item is sterling silver. The third is difficult to make out at first, but close examination reveals it to be the assay mark for London, which is a leopard's head. The fourth hallmark is the letter C inside a shield; this mark indicates what year the item was made--this item can be accurately dated to 1878. Finally, the fifth hallmark is one that was used from 1784-1890 and is called the Sovereign Head, or "duty mark". This mark is Queen Victoria's and signifies the payment of the duty during her reign. Putting all the information from the hallmarks together, it can be said with confidence that this piece of sterling silver was made by Garrand & Company, LTD. of London, England during the reign of Queen Victoria, in 1878! The chafer stand is in good condition, though showing tarnish; it measures about 6 1/2" wide and stands 3 3/4" tall and weighs in at 351.82 grams.
