Exceptional D. José coffee pot in Portuguese silver by João Coelho Sampaio, 18th century. Pear-shaped body with profuse drawn and chiseled "rocaille" decoration, with fins, shells, flowers and vegetal scrolls. "Swan neck" beak topped with an animal's head. Lid button in the shape of a flowering pine cone. Handle in carved Brazilian rosewood. Golden interior. With Oporto hallmark (P-13.0), datable from 1750 to 1760, and ICS makers mark (P-321.0), by João Coelho Sampaio, datable from c.1742 to c.1784. Signs of wear and tear

João Coelho Sampaio who was born in 1719 and died in 1784, worked as a goldsmith from 1747 onwards, having also been an assayer for the Porto City Council. He is unanimously considered the best Portuguese goldsmith, always showing great technical and artistic capacity in his works, unrivaled in national goldsmithing.
This coffee pot is undoubtedly one of the best examples of the exceptional quality of João Coelho Sampaio's work.
