Important set of 1004 handwritten letters, postcards and business cards for the writer, lexicologist and poet António Cândido de Figueiredo (1846-1925), from various personalities of Portuguese intellectual society in the second half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century.
The varied correspondence highlights the exchange of literary impressions, the debate around etymological issues of the Portuguese language, reading suggestions, critical analysis of the writer's works by his peers, and his work as a high school teacher. It is an important testimony of the life and work of this writer, and of his professional connections and friendship with the most relevant figures in the Portuguese literary, journalistic and academic milieu of the 19th century. , labeled from A to Q (each folder includes a handwritten list with the names of the senders).
We highlight some of the senders represented in each folder: A - Alexandre Herculano and Inocêncio Francisco da Silva (1810-1876); B - Delfim Guimarães, poet (1872-1933); C - António Augusto Teixeira de Vasconcelos, as director of "Jornal da Noite" (1871-1878); Sousa Viterbo, who in a letter dated 1908 praised the writer in the following way: "You did well to summarize your poetic life, because in that way you provided a secure basis for appreciation to those who did not know you closely. Your Pilgrimages are as esteemed as that of Fernão Mendes Pinto, perhaps even more authentic, since you make your journeys in the worlds of phantasy (...)"; Júlio de Vilhena (1845-1928), wrote in 1924: "Cândido is for me the most authoritative judge among us on ways of writing words..."; Carolina Michaëlis (1851-1925), mentions the well-known polemical debate between the writer and Leite de Vasconcelos on topics related to the Portuguese language, which developed into a series of texts published in newspapers; D - Count of Monsaraz; Oliveira Martins; Rocha Martins; Bernardino Machado, whose secretary he was; Ramalho Ortigão, who thanked him for the article that the writer "consecrated for him in Ecos da Avenida"; E - Nasturtium Pine; Luciano Cordeiro, his admirer and friend; Latin Rabbit; Afonso Costa (1871-1937); F - Manuel de Arriaga; Brito Aranha (1833-1914); Anselmo de Andrade (1844-1928); G - Júlio Dantas, represented with 13 letters, mentions in 1908 "such an exceptional talent and such a singular nobility of character, he has known how to honor the profession of man of letters in Portugal"; John of God; Antero de Figueiredo; Anselmo Braamcamp Freire; H - Inácio de Vilhena de Barbosa; Teófilo Braga; Camilo Castelo Branco, represented with 12 cards; I - Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, with 4 letters; White Gonta Colaço; António Feliciano de Castilho; Julius of Castilho; António Cândido Ribeiro da Costa, with 7 letters; J - Antero de Quental, with 5; Count of Casal Ribeiro; Tomás Ribeiro (1831-1901); Joaquim Possidónio Narciso da Silva, with 6; Conde de Sabugosa (1851-1923), with 10 letters; L - Bulhão Pato, with 16 cards; Alberto Pimentel (1849-1925), with 6; Silva Pinto (1848-1911), with 5; M - Folder with foreign senders, including 2 letters from Madame Rattazzi; 5 letters from the Mexican writer Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-1896); and 7 letters by the French orientalist Garcin de Tassy (1794-1878), among others; N - 2 letters from Augusto Santa Rita (1889-1918); O - Document on the participation of the writer as a deputy in the assembly of Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo (now Montijo); the writer's candidacy document for deputy on the island of Graciosa, Azores, 1892; P - Folder with 53 letters by the Brazilian philologist Mário Castelo Branco Barreto (1879-1931); Q - Folder with predominantly Brazilian senders or those associated with Brazil, including 17 letters from José Júlio da Silva Ramos (1853-1930) and 9 letters from the writer João Ribeiro (1860-1934).
