Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1972), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1980), Honorary member of the Italian Academy of Arts (1979), Knight of the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1989), "Honorary Member of the Gekkoso Gallery in Tokyo, Japan (1980). In 1935-1939 he studied at the 1905 Moscow Regional Pedagogical Art College under N.P. Krymov, N.N. Gorelov, A.P.Chirkov, S.I. Frolov. Upon graduation, I.E. Grabar and A.M. Gerasimov select N.I. Barchenkov for admission without exams to the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute. However, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, N.I. Barchenkov returned to Zagorsk, where he worked as a poster artist, making, among other things, copies of posters from the TASS Window samples. In 1943, together with S.Ya.Dunchev, N.Ya. Belyaev and others, he organized the Zagorsk Professional Organization of Artists. He works in the Zagorsk Art and Industrial Workshop. In 1945, he fruitfully collaborated with members of the USSR Academy of Arts, A.I.Laktionov, Ts.S. Stoyanov, V.P.Trofimov, who during this period worked at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. In 1948, he joined the first Stream at the I.E. Repin Academic Cottage, where he worked with A. P. Bubnov, T. G. Gaponenko and P. N. Krylov. At the beginning of his creative career, he realized primarily as an animalist. In 1949, for his participation in the republican exhibition with the painting "To the Liberated Places", he was awarded the diploma of the "All-Artist" and the diploma of the Committee for Arts Affairs under the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR. In 1951, he created the panel "Herd of the Karavaevo State Farm" for the Livestock pavilion at the All-Russian Exhibition. Since 1944, he has been a regular participant in national and All-Union exhibitions and traveling exhibitions. In the USSR and the Russian Federation, major solo exhibitions were held in Moscow, Sergiev Posad, St. Petersburg, (1953, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1998 years), posthumous - in 2003, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 years . Since 1965, he has been a regular participant in exhibitions of Soviet art abroad: in the USA, France, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, Italy, Finland, Greece, Germany, Switzerland. His works are especially actively bought by the Japanese Gekkoso Gallery, which holds two major solo exhibitions of the artist (1978, 1980) and assigns him the status of an honorary member of the gallery. His work is also very popular in Italy, where he was awarded a gold medal at the Bari Fair in 1979 and received the title of honorary member of the Italian Academy of Arts. In 1984, a major solo exhibition was held in Montreal (Canada). N.I. Barchenkov also actively collaborated with the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, thanks to which his works are still in Russian embassies around the world. In 1989, he was awarded the Order of Peoples' Friendship for his great contribution to Soviet fine art and the promotion of Soviet art abroad. The artist's works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Central Museum of Modern History of Russia, the Museum of Political History of Russia, the ROSIZO State Museum and Exhibition Center, the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve, the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art, the Tula Museum of Fine Arts, and many other regional museums and private collections throughout Russia, including including Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Abroad, the artist's works are represented in the galleries of R.Nikolai and Sohn (Germany), Desa Gallery (Poland), Multicom Gallery (USA), Galerie Kocken, Städtisches Museum Simeonstift (Germany) and many other museums.
