Lot of 2 bags of cloth for the Land of Israel from Rachel's Tomb and Mount of Olives, 1930s.
An ancient Jewish custom in the Diaspora of Israel, to put dirt from the Land of Israel in the graves of the deceased, also used it variously as a virtue for pregnancy and more.
Traditionally, merchants and institutions in Israel used to sell overseas Jews with cloth bags containing dirt from Eretz Israel.
In front of us is a piece of cloth designed to be sewn and used as a bag full of dirt, the cloth is pink in color with the inscription "Dirt from Rachel's Tomb" with caption and illustration from Rachel's Tomb.
On the piece of cloth, the seller's name is printed: "Avraham Yitzhak Mintz, Sun Dabra Kadisha Old City, Jerusalem".
Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak Mintz (1934) was a renowned businessman in Jerusalem, serving, among other things, as a backer of the "Horevah" synagogue in the Old City and the back of the friend Kadisha. Killed in a terrorist attack on Sivan 1933 while performing his job in handling graves on the Mount of Olives.
