Warsaw Uprising - Rare Field Hospital Document 1944
Rare Warsaw Field Hospital document dated 1944, during the famous uprising of Warsaw. The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation, in the summer of 1944, by the Polish underground resistance, led by the Home Army (Polish: Armia Krajowa), to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. The uprising was timed to coincide with the retreat of the German forces from Poland ahead of the Soviet advance. While approaching the eastern suburbs of the city, the Red Army temporarily halted combat operations, enabling the Germans to regroup and defeat the Polish resistance and to destroy the city in retaliation. The Uprising was fought for 63 days with little outside support. It was the single largest military effort taken by any European resistance movement during World War II.We are offering the official printed document issued during the Warsaw Uprising for the field hospital at Mokotowska 55. The document concerns the request to the neighboring Commandant of the building for furnishing several items needed for the hospital. Stamp and signature of the hospital commander can be seen on it. At the bottom, a handwritten note says that all these items have been delivered. Any documents and letters from Warsaw Uprising are very rare! WARSAW ESTABLISHMENT Field hospital ul. Mokotowska 55 in a building belonging to the Franciscan Sisters operated from 1 August. Hospital rooms on the first and second floor have been prepared for 50 beds. An operating room was also arranged on the first floor. The following days the number of wounded increased. Gradually the wounded were moved to the ground floor, and finally to the basements under buildings No. 55 and 56. For some time, electricity for the needs of the operating room and dressing rooms in the basement was "produced" by the young by bicycle dynamos, later replaced by German prisoners. After a while, a generator with a motorcycle was invented. On September 20, as a result of heavy artillery fire, the building was severely damaged, the floors in the outbuilding were completely ruined. Work became more and more difficult, there was no light, no water for food. The hospital was full. Until October 2, the hospital served 749 wounded. Amazing story represented in some kind in this document! Document is in good condition and prefectly readable.
