The author, Rabbi Yosef ben Naim from Fez (1882-1961), a scion of the ancient Ben Naim family who has produced many great Rabbis. At the when he was miraculously saved along with some of his students. He then begun teaching Torah in the "HaToshavim" synagogue, for 27 years he delivered lectures in halacha and aggadah, Bible and Talmud, the hidden and revealed Torah, hundreds of people flocked to hear his astounding lectures and sermons which were written down and collected into thirty seven (!) books. He put most of his efforts into preserving and eternalizing the memory of the great Moroccan Rabbis. In his large library were some 10,000 books and manuscripts, most of them manuscripts of great Moroccan Rabbis over the generations. After his death the library was purchased by the Beit HaMedrash LeRabbanim in New York, but tragically a fire broke out in the storehouse where the books were kept, and only 134 of them were saved.
He wrote some 37 works, some of them were published and some remained in manuscripts. His first book "Hadarta Pnei Zaken" was published in 1903, at the age of 21. Many of the facts, stories and customs which he quoted in this book were from primary sources, from things which he saw with his own eyes or learned in the vast amount of manuscripts and rare books which he owned.
