Michael Loew: Abstract Composition
Michael Loew (American, 1907-1985) Attributed: Abstract Composition. watercolor on paper, signed bottom right. Michael Loew began his art career as a student at the Art Student's League. After a two year trip to Paris, Africa, Germany, and Italy, he returned to New York City and was greatly affected by the ongoing Great Depression. In 1935, he was hired by the WPA to paint a variety of murals, including a collaboration with Willem de Kooning, who would become a lifelong friend, for the Hall of Pharmacy at the 1939 New York World's Fair. After some time as a Seabee after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Loew returned to painting but began painting abstract compositions. After additional training at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine arts and Atelier Leger, he would teach at the Portland Museum School, UC Berkeley, and the School of Visual Arts in NYC.
