TOLOMEO, Claudio (100-170) - La geografia nuovamente tradotta di greco in italiano, da Girolamo Ruscelli.. Espositioni, et introduttioni uniuersali di Girolamo Ruscelli sopra la Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino - Discorso universale di M. Gioseppe Moleto. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1561. First edition with Ruscelli's translation: 'A new and important edition, with a new series of maps' (Sabin). The maps in the present work are a larger versions based on those by Giacomo Gastaldi, first published in the edition of 1548. Ten of the maps relate to the Americas, including map XXXV, a revised version of the Zeno map of the Arctic, describing the journey of the author's ancestors in the 1390s to Greenland, Iceland, the mythical islands of Frisland and Icaria, and what is now thought to be Newfoundland and Labrador. While Zeno shows Greenland connected to Norway, Ruscelli has updated the map by eliminating this land bridge. Other New World maps include the South American continent, Brazil, Central America and the Baja Peninsula, the eastern coast of North America, Cuba and Hispaniola. 3 parts in one volume, 4to (223 x 158mm). Printer's device on titles and at end of Espositioni, numeours woodcut illustrations and diagrams, 64 engraved plates: 28 in the Discorso and 36 in Espositioni, woodcut headpieces and initials (maps on guards, general title reinforced in margins, some light soiling and waterstaining, occasional browning and spotting). Later vellum, manuscript title on spine (light staining). In the present copy the Discorso is bound at end while the maps are in the middle. In the maps of the Espositioni after Moscovia there is the map of Piedmont as in the digitized copy of the Cassanese Library in Rome but with the numbering of the maps and the collation being inaccurate. The collation is as in SBN but without M1-M2: *⁴ A-2Y⁴ †² ²A-Z² A₁-D₄2; α-η⁴ A-2N² (senza M1-M2); A-F⁴, ²A-F⁴. Provenance: early illegible ownership inscription on title and some annotations.
