D. Fr. Bartolomeu dos Mártires, O.P. (1514-1590), a prominent figure of the 16th century Portuguese Church, stood out in the third and last session of the Council of Trento (1562-1563), having been archbishop of Braga between 1559 and 1582. In 2001 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II and in 2016 he was canonized by the current Pope Francis. Second Castilia n translation (the first dates from 1619), by Juan Bautista de Yarza. Copy slightly trimmed with marbled edge but clean, preserving the rare portrait of the biographer, near the title page, copperplate printed with the signature: B. Audran Sc. Small marginal wormholes, repaired with rice paper, affecting more than half of the leaves, but never reaching the text. A slightly trimmed portrait on the upper and left margins, preserving three of the four plate-marks of the matrix. Entire flexible parchment binding, probably well after editing. Palau, 39002
