RABBI YECHEZKEL HALSTUK (1887-1943), REBBE OF OSTROVTZA (OSTROWIEC) – LETTER TO RABBI YOSEF LEWINSTEIN (1840-1924), RABBI OF SEROCK .

An interesting letter, dated Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul 5682 [1922], thanking the Rabbi of Serock for lending the Ostrovtza Rebbe a manuscript volume of the writings of Rabbi Avraham Abish of Frankfurt. It is noteworthy that the Rabbi of Serock, who was 82 at the time, seems to have held the Rebbe of Ostrovtza, then a young man of only 35, in high esteem, entrusting him with this precious heirloom.

Rabbi Yechezkel Halstuk, son of the famous gaon and tzadik Rabbi Meir Yechiel, the Rebbe of Ostrovtza, and son-in-law of Rabbi Naftali Horowitz of Melitz. Rabbi Yechezkel was a disciple of his father, and a devoted follower of Rabbi David Moshe of Chortkow. In 1911 he was appointed Rabbi of Inowlodz and in 1921 he became Rabbi of Nasielsk, succeeding his father as Rabbi and Rebbe of Ostrovtza, where he established a Yeshiva Beis Meir, with branches in Warsaw, Lodz and Czestochowa. Great rabbinic scholar and author of Kodoshei Yechezkel.

Rabbi Yosef Lewinstein, born in Lublin into a fine rabbinical family, Rabbi of Chorzil (1860), Zaklikow and Serock. A highly respected Polish rabbinical scholar, author and historian.

Letter written on official stationery, 11.5x16.5 cm. Excellent condition.
