DECLARATION BY BRITISH CHIEF RABBI - RABBI SHLOMO HIRSCHEL, AND THE ASHKENAZI AND SEPHARDI RABBINICAL COURTS, AGAINST THE REFORM PRAYER BOOK PRINTED IN LONDON, 1842.


Sharp warning by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Hirschel and the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Rabbinical Courts against the prayer book published in London in 1841 for the first British Reform congregation.
The warning states that ‘... the manner and order of the prayers and blessings have been curtailed and altered and otherwise arranged not in accordance with the Oral Law ...’ and warns all G-d fearing Jews against buying that prayer book or taking it into their homes.
Signed by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Hirschel and dayanim Rabbi Ahron ben R. Yehuda Leib of Lissa, Rabbi Ahron Yehuda Leib son of R. Yissachar Ber of Krotoschin, together with the Sephardi Beth Din of Rabbi David son of R. Refael Meldola and dayanim Rabbi Avraham son of R. Yosef Haliwa and Rabbi Ezriel son of R. David HaLevy.

Rabbi Shlomo Hirschel (1761-1842), son of Rabbi Hirsch Berlin, Rabbi of London and Berlin - a grandson of the Chacham Tzvi and descendant of the famous Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel of Krakow. Served as Rabbi of Prenzlau, Prussia, before being appointed to succeed Rabbi David Tevelle Schiff as Chief Rabbi in London, a position he held for forty years.
