RABBINICAL PERMIT TO REMARRY ISSUED AFTER THE HOLOCAUST TO RABBI YOSEF ASHKENAZY (GABBAI OF THE SATMARER REBBE), BY THE BETH DIN OF SZATMAR, HEADED BY RABBI MOSHE ARYEH FREUND.


Permit issued by the Beth Din of Szatmar, to R. Efrayim Yosef Dov Ashkenazi to remarry after losing his wife during the Holocaust. The members of the Beth Din were Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund – later Av Beth Din of the Eida Charedis in Yerushalayim, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Friedman of Rachov, and Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Weiss, Rabbi of Nevei Achiezer.

Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund (1904-1996), son of Rabbi Yisrael of Huniad; was renowned from a young age for his Torah scholarship and saintliness, and served as assistant to his father at his Yeshiva. He lost his first wife and eight children in the Holocaust. After WWII, he served as Rabbi of Szatmar for a short period, before settling in Jerusalem where he headed Yeshivas Yitav Lev – Szatmar and was appointed Dayan of the Eida Charedis, and subsequently as Rosh Beis Din and finally as Av Beis Din. Founded Kiriath Rema in Beit Shemesh, as well as a Talmud Torah and Yeshivos that were later named Mosdos Rema in his memory. Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund was highly regarded for his saintliness and Torah scholarship and considered a poel yeshuos (performer of miracles). Author of Ateres Yehoshua.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Friedman (d. 1980), son of Rabbi Yisrael Chaim of Rachov – author of Likutei Maharich, succeeded his father in Rachov (1922), and served as Dayan in Szatmar after WWII, before moving to Lugano, Switzerland, where he served as Rabbi for 30 years and was one of Europe’s most highly revered rabbinical leaders.

Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Weiss (1902-1979), son of Rabbi Menachem – a Dayan in Munkacz. Received rabbinical ordination from the Rabbi of Radomishla and the Keren le’David of Szatmar. Dayan of Szatmar and after settling in Eretz Yisrael Rabbi of the orthodox community in Yaffo, before being appointed Rabbi of Nevei Achiezer – Bnei Brak in 1954.
