RABBI MOSHE FEINSTEIN – SHARPLY WORDED HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER AGAINST AUTOPSIES IN ERETZ YISRAEL. ‘ALTHOUGH THERE WERE RUMOURS THAT THE GOVERNMENT PROMISED TO STOP THIS GREAT EVIL, NOTHING HAS CHANGED’.

An extremely sharply worded letter by leading halachic authority Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, against the Israeli law allowing autopsies. ‘As far as the terrible situation regarding autopsies in Eretz Yisrael is concerned, for our many sins, this situation has been continuing for a long time, and although there were rumours that the government promised to stop this great evil, nothing has changed. They want to calm all those people in our country who want to do the right thing ... it is an obligation upon every person to do whatever possible to stop this and it comes within the category of Meis Mitzva (the obligation of every Jew to ensure the burial of a Jewish corpse). The letter continues with the suggestion that Yeshiva students, who are not involved in making a livelihood as much as others are, should assist the efforts of the Vaad Lemaan Kevod Ha’adam.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986), son of Rabbi David, Rabbi of Uzda. A disciple of Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer of Slutzk and Rabbi Pesach Pruskin of Shklov.
