RABBI SHIMON GRUNFELD (1882-1930) – RABBI OF SZENHIMIHALY, KNOWN AS ‘MAHARSHAG’ HALACHIC RESPONSUM ADRESSED TO RABBI YAAKOV TZVI KATZ OF SZOBOSZLO. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED RESPONSUM.
This interesting responsum, dated 1929, addresses the permissibility of installing a boiler in a Synagogue to provide heating (which had been forbidden by Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch of Bonyhad). An interesting halachic discussion as to when the famous dictum of the Chassam Sofer forbidding innovations applies, and referring to climate differences between Europe and Eretz Yisrael, as well as to technological advances. The author also quotes Rabbi Yeshaya Silberstein of Weitzen and the Maharam Schick.
A long and interesting responsum.
Rabbi Shimon Grunfeld (1880-1930), disciple of his father Rabbi Yehuda – Rabbi of Szenhimihaly, and of Maharam Schick, leading Hungarian halachic authority, known by the acronym ‘Maharshag’. Dayan in Munkascz and from 1907 successor to his father as Rabbi of Szenhimihaly. Author of Shaalos U’Teshuvos Maharshag (2 vols.).
Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Katz (d. 1964), son of Rabbi Shlomo Katz of Szoboszlo, where he succeeded his father in 1919. After WWII he served as Rabbi in Amsterdam. Author of Leket Hakemach Hachadash.
