Arnold Böcklin (after)

Der Büsser, 1898
Black and white xylograph applied on Japan paper, 53,5 x 43,5 cm
Der Büsser is an original print, realized in 1898.
The series contains xylographs that represent some of the most famous paintings of Arnold Böcklin. Printed by J.J. Weber, Leipzig.
Original title of the artwork: Der Büsser. The title is printed on the lower right corner.
The print was realized by Johann Jacob Weber and it is part of the series Meisterwerke der Holzschneidekunst (original title: SECHZEHN HOLZSCHNITTE NACH GEMÄLDEN ARNOLD BÖCKLIN (MEISTERWERKE DER HOLZSCHNEIDEKUNST, NEUE FOLGE HEFT V) printed in 1898 and dedicated to Arnold Böcklin.
This black and white xylograph represents a man, most likely a penitent, at the foot of a cross on a spur of a rock. The scene is set in a dense forest. The artwork, characterized by a grim atmosphere, reflects the style and themes of the artist.
Good conditions, except for yellowing of the paper (especially along the margins), and a stain on the higher right.
