Lars Bo

Pas De Trois, 1971
Print, 31.2 x 24 cm
Pas de Trois is an original print by the Danish artist Lars Bo, engraved in 700 signed proofs in 1971 for the editions of the Faprier Gallery in Paris, as suggested by the dry-stamp on the lower right of the paper with the writing “Galerie des / Peintres-Graveurs / J Faprier / Paris”. On the lower right, outside the matrix, there is also the signature in pencil of the artist.

The Faprier Gallery is one of the most ancient galleries in Paris, active also as editor of engravings of the most important artists of the 20th century. Founded by E. Faprier in 1920, the gallery closed in 1934 to reopen thanks to his son Jacques Faprier in 1959.

Lars Bo (Kolding, Denmark, 1924-1999) studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Copenhagen and published his first drawings in Danish newspapers and magazines. He moved to Paris in 1947, when he started making engravings to build his international reputation. From 1959, the artist dedicated exclusively to graphic works (engravings and illustrated books), and chose fantasy and surrealist themes.

The Pas de Trois is a dance performed by three dancers, represented in this artwork with three strongly symbolic dancing beings: a three-headed peacock, an anthropomorphic figure that seems to be made up of branches and roots, and a rampant deer. A flaming bird is flying near them, probably a phoenix. These symbols all relate to rebirth and immortality.

This top-notch print presents a very interesting and meaningful illustration.
The state of preservation is excellent, except for some light marks of inking on the higher left margin and on the lower margin.
