Twins Seven Seven (Nigeria, Africa) (1944-2011), Nightmare Dream
Twins Seven Seven (Nigeria, Africa) (1944-2011), Nightmare Dream, black ink on paper, not signed, framed under glass (glass is fractured), measurements: 60X85 cm. The artwork arrives from a private collection including a total of three artworks by the artist, among them one signed that was left in the estate in a similar size, therefore we have no doubt the source is reliable and it is indeed this artist. * Twins Seven Seven - was the lone surviving twin out of a birth of seven consecutive twins who were born to the Bashorun royal family of the Yoruba people in Nigeria. When he grew up in a village named Ijara, he made a living as a musician and dancer until in 1964 he discovered the second arts workshop managed by ex-patriots, Georgina and Ulli Beier. This school was known as the Oshogbo Art School and the Prince Twins Seven Seven became a prominent member and a school hero. He began sketching pen and ink on paper but transitioned to ink and painting on large sheets of lamination plywood. Lines and drawing, with the addition of engraving, remained central to his work. As an African modernist, his works are highly considered and can be found in important central collections around the world: MOMA, New York; The Musée de l'Homme, Paris; Fowler Museum, Los Angeles; The National Museum of African Art, Washington and the National Museum of Art, Lagos. Starting with "Magiciens de la Terre" at the Centre Pompidou, Paris in 1989, he went on to recieve invitations to display in many solo and collective exhibitions in Japan, Europe, USA and Australia. In 2005 the Unesco organization declared him "The Artist of Peace".
