Special: Kvitlach with the name and children’s names of the Admor Rabbi Yochanan Sofer of Erlau. Purim, 1976-1977.
Two kvitlach and an envelope handwritten by the Admor of Erlau, Rabbi Yochanan Sofer, with an envelope in which he sent them to the tzaddik and kabbalist Rabbi Meir Kohen of Jerusalem. The two notes (one of which seems not to be his handwritten) have his name for prayer, “Yochanan ben Toshene”, the name of the rabbanit, and his children’s names and those of his grandchildren, including his eldest son and successor, the Admor of Erlau shlita. According to the handwriting of the kabbalist Rabbi Meir Kohen, which appears in the page margins, these were sent on Purim of 1976 and 1977, presumably with a pidyon nefesh as was typical.
The Admor Rabbi Yochanan Sofer of Erlau (1924-2016) was the son of the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Sofer, hy”d. He was the great-grandson and successor of the Chatam Sofer’s line. He was a great Admor of the last generation and wrote the work Imrei Sofer. He was his grandfather’s student, Rabbi Shimon Sofer of Erlau (the Hitorerut Tshuva), and of Rabbi Yosef Asher HaLevi Folk and Rabbi Aharon David Deutsch. He was a member of the Council of Torah Sages of Agudas Yisrael. He founded an olah shel Torah in memory of the Chatam Sofer at his well-known yeshiva and book publisher.
