Merkavat HaMishnah on the Mechilta, published with the encouragement of the Admor Rabbi Yehoshua of Belz. First edition, Lemberg 1894, with handwritten notes
A broad exegesis on the Mechilta of Rabbi Yishmael by the Gaon Rabbi David Moshe Avraham Ashkenazi, the Av Beit Din of Rohatin. Printed by Pesil Blaven, 152 leaves. Important endorsements by Rabbi Uri Zeev Salant, Rabbi Yitzhak Landau, Rabbi Haim Rapaport, and more, in which the rabbis talk about the author’s greatness and tell about the way that he ‘masar et nafsho’ to chase after and persecute the remaining Shabtai followers in his city until they were excommunicated. Introduction by his grandsons states: “our grandfather told us that the Baal Shem Tov came to him to tell him that he was sent from Heaven to strengthen him and sharpen him for the fanaticism that was required of him…” Rabbi Yehuda Raten, son of Rabbi Aryeh Leib of Stratin writes: “I also had a letter from the Admor Rabbi Yehoshua of Belz and he praised the author greatly and told him that he commanded all those who found the work that they must bring it to light and publish it.” Tape and tears in the margins of the title page and endorsements, tears and light stains elsewhere. New binding, overall good condition. Stamps of “Library of Yeshivat Chochmei Lublin” in the body of the work, underlining by hand in a number of places, and other handwritten notes.
