The Mystery of Herzl, In sale number 7, the JNF with the lawyer representing them called to stop the sale of the item. After deliberations, the JNF realized that they had no chance in court and therefore gave up, and this item returned for sale.
The coffin of the state contract of Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl is an embroidered sheet of cloth prepared in Austria by WIZO women, and intended to cover Herzl's coffin when his bones are brought for burial in Israel. The curtain disappeared in 1949 after the funeral ceremony, and the place of invention remained a mystery for 70 years, until it was found in 2019 in the JNF warehouses.
In August 1949, when Herzl's coffin was removed from his tomb in Vienna, in preparation for his bones being brought to Israel, the curtain was placed on it. Lod Airport, its placement in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with the Guard of Honor, until his burial ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
At the end of the ceremony, and before the coffin was lowered to his grave, the curtain was removed from the coffin, and it was supposed to arrive according to plan, to the State Archives and from there to the Herzl Museum and Room that plans to build in his honor. The curtain was to be displayed and remain in the museum. Mysteriously, she did not reach her destination and disappeared.
From the burial ceremony until its discovery after 70 years, several efforts have been made to locate the lost historical curtain, and to try to understand what happened to it, but to no avail. Over 50 fascinating documents on the subject of the curtain of the Ark of the Covenant. (In photocopying only some of the documents due to space constraint).
In this collection, correspondence between the chairman of JNF and the Jewish Agency in Austria, Wizo, in order to prepare another curtain.
In July 2019, 115 years after Herzl's death and 70 years after his bones were brought to Israel, the curtain was restored by the World Zionist Organization for the Herzl Museum. On August 7, 2019, two weeks after the restoration of the restored curtain and 70 years after it disappeared, the original curtain was found in the JNF warehouses.
