ALAN G. KIRK
(1888 - 1963) American admiral, served as an amphibious commander in the Mediterranean in 1942 and 1943 (the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy). In addition, he was the senior U.S. naval commander during the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944, embarked on the heavy cruiser USS Augusta, and as Commander U.S. Naval Forces, France during 1944 and 1945. Good content war-date T.L.S. 'Alan" on "United States Naval Forces in Europe' letterhead, 1p. 4to., London, Nov. 24, 1942 to former American Consul in London John Erhardt. In part: '...It seems a pity the war machine can't settle after being at it nearly a year...everybody is trying to get a good job for himself with lots of power, publicity and prestige. Pretty soon we had all better begin working for the country. The war certainly looks better...The lads have a couple of bulls by the tail however and no one knows quite how to let go...' Very good.
