FRED C. WALLACE
(1887 - 1959) American major general, commanded the 4th Island Command, Central Pacific (October 1943); commanded the Tenth Army, and was assigned as island commander, Okinawa (May 1945). War-date A.L.S. 'Wallace' as Commander, 5th Corps Area, with transmittal envelope signed in full, 2pp. 8vo., Fort Hayes, Sep 12, 1942 to Major Gen. John P. Smith. Wallace writes his friend to tell him of his distress to learn that Smith may not return to his 'old job' and hopes that a way will be found for him to continue his 'grand work'. He hopes that Smith has a quick recovery, adding: '...we can't get along without men like you...' Fine.
