FRITZ FULLRIEDE
FRITZ FULLRIEDE
(1895 - 1969) German officer and war criminal. Fullriede fought in the invasion of Poland, on the Eastern Front, in the Afrika Korps and the Italian Campaign, and received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves in 1945. Fullriede was tried and convicted by a Dutch court for his role in the Putten raid of 1944 in which 554 Dutch men were sent to their deaths in a reprisal action. T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Borstel, Aug. 9, 1961 in German to a researcher. In part: '...So far I have never published my photograph. I already told you the reasons for this...I want to have a picture of myself made in Africa during the African campaign...I don't think I have any documents...the majority of such things were burned by the Russians...another part was confiscated by the Americans...' He discusses the inaccuracy of American accounts of battles against his forces in North Africa, and further notes that reports sent to Berlin were usually only concerning past events due to the danger of "betrayal by the Italians". Fine.
