GEORGE C. MARSHALL
(1880 - 1959) American general and statesman, Roosevelt's Army Chief of Staff during World War II and author of the Marshall Plan which sustained eastern Europe after the war. Outstanding content T.L.S. on Chief of Staff letterhead, 1p. sm. 4to., Washington, May 26, 1945, a letter regarding the memorial of Franklin D. Roosevelt sent just weeks after his death, addressed to Roosevelt's friend and president of the American Red Cross BASIL O'CONNOR (1892 -1972) as a member of the Roosevelt National Memorial Committee. In part: 'Dear Mr. O'Connor…I shall be glad to serve on the Planning Committee that will consider a suitable memorial for President Roosevelt…I should point out that my official duties carry me away from Washington a great deal and very often on short notice…I may not be able to be a regular attendant at the meetings…However, I shall be glad to do everything possible to contribute…' The verso bears a 'date received' stamp from the Committee's office, dated May 28, 1945. Marshall signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Some creasing and two small tears along the right edge, else very good. Working directly with President Roosevelt, Basil O'Connor is also known for starting two foundations for the rehabilitation and treatment of polio patients.
