HERBERT-OTTO GILLE PROMOTES A FUTURE KNIGHTS CROSS RECIPIENT
(1897 - 1966) Germany SS tank commander who headed the 'Viking' Division, made up of thousands of European volunteers, during the Russian campaign. War-date typed D.S. as head of the Viking Division, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.], Mar. 28, 1943. Gille signs a promotion document for Haupsturmfuhrer Karl-Heinz Buhler of SS-Artillerie Regiment 5 promoting him to the rank of SS-Sturmbannfuhrer. Gille cites the man's: '...strong, distinctive character, self-confident, clear, determined...High professional understanding, knows how to lead...impeccable SS demeanor...convinced National Socialist...'. Gille adds his pencil-signed approval at conclusion. A bit damp stained with file holes and a small loss in a blank corner, else good to very good. KARL-HEINZ BUHLER (1912-1981) was awarded the EKII, EKI, and German Cross in Gold which is noted in the document as well. He was awarded the Knights Cross on May 6, 1945.
