MARK W. CLARK
(1896 - 1984) American general, commanded the landings at Salerno and Anzio against the forces of Kesselring. Good content T.L.S. on Far East Command Headquarters letterhead, 1p. 4to., Tokyo, June 14, 1952, a letter to a fellow soldier from the Italian campaign. Clark forwards signed photographs (not present), and notably adds: '...It always gives me great pleasure to see and hear from the men who served with me in Italy, and I deeply appreciate your kind words about my present assignment. I walked into a difficult situation, but knowing I have the confidence of my fellow Americans gives me additional strength to carry on.' This refers to Clark's appointment as commander of the United Nations Command during the Korean War, in which he commanded UN forces there until the armistice was signed the following year. Clark signs in full at the conclusion. Very good.
