('AXIS SALLY') MILDRED GILLARS
(1900 - 1988) 'Axis Sally', an American broadcaster employed by Nazi Germany to disseminate propaganda along with Rita Zucca during World War II. Following her capture in post-war Berlin, she became the first woman to be convicted of treason against the United States. Sentenced to ten to thirty years' imprisonment in March 1949, she was released in 1961. Rare black ink signature 'Mildred Gillars' on the forwarding address of an envelope, originally sent to a flower shop in Columbus, OH - the same city where she had moved after her release from prison. The upper-right section bears a Columbus hand cancel, dated 'Apr. 18, 1981'. Vertical folds, else fine.
