NIKOLAUS VON VORMANN
(1895 – 1959) German general and Knights Cross recipient, commanded the Prussian 9th Army in World War I. In World War II, he served on the Eastern Front campaigns and in 1944 briefly commanded the 9th Army when he became involved in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising. Von von Vormann's last appointment was as commander of the largely non-existent 'Alpenfestung' (Alpine Fortress). T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berchtesgaden, Oct. 7, 1958, in German. In response to a researcher's query, he writes: '...please let me know first what I should answer. I take it for granted that this is not a repetition of the delightful questionnaire game with which you thought you had to please us Germans after 1945...' Fine.
