PAULA HITLER
(1896 - 1960) Younger sister of Adolf Hitler, his only sibling to survive into adulthood. She never joined the Nazi Party and largely remained on the sidelines, though after the war she accepted the charity of ex-SS officers and survivors of Hitler's inner circle. Scarce T.L.S. 'Paula Hitler-Wolf' (the 'Wolf" added during her brother's rise to power to help her avoid publicity), 1p. 4to. on airmail onionskin, Berchtesgaden, Jan. 12, 1954, in German to Russell F. Anderson who was negotiating with her to write her memoir. She writes, in part: '...Individual answering of letters...will only be possible for me when the responsible authorities have allowed themselves to acknowledge my existence. I not only lack money, but also lack time to deal with private correspondance...I will soon have a conflict with my brother's housekeeper who claims my brother's personal estate in full...for the time being, the Bavarian state is still holding the estate in custody.' A bit wrinkled at top, else very good. Ultimately, Paula received nothing from her brother's estate, which he had bequeathed to the German State in his final hours before committing suicide with Eva Braun in the Fuhrerbunker. The German courts upheld his will, thus gaining for Germany Hitler's remaining personal and real property, as well as the rights to 'Mein Kampf', his speeches, and his other writings.
